The Best apprentices in the West

WA's best automotive apprentices took the first step to making the WA team by impressing at the state world skills event, held at the perth truck show nd at Carlisle TAFE. The winners of the Australian championships will be in line to represent Australia in the Worldskills International competition to be held in Canada in 2009.
The winners of the automotive categories in the Worlskills State competition were:

  • Auto body Repair: Richard Rowe, Rowe & Son
  • Automotive Mechanics: Nicholas Della-Pona, Lane Ford
  • Heavy Vehicle Mechanics: Paul MacArthur, Westrans
  • Vehicle Painting: Corey Ward, Esperance Smash Repairs

Competitors in each category were tested on a variety of skills, with judging in each category including safe work practices.
Competitors in the auto repair category had to reduce the length of a sill panel section, perform MIG welds, repair a damaged guard and an oxy weld split.
The auto mechanics category simulated a 100,000km service, with competitors asked to perform an engine tune and diagnosis, complete a cooling system inspection service and a report, brake service, front suspension and steering, cam belt replacement and a vehicle maintenance check.
Elements tested in heavy vehicle mechanics included hydraulics, electronic diesel engine management, steering, engine diagnosis and report, air brakes and report, and electrical and report.
Competitors in the vehicle painting were tested on preparation, application of clear over basecoat for design panel, buff polish, detail and decal and colour matching.

CONNOR Lord of Bunbury was the winner of the signed West Coast Eagles jumper colouring-in competition featured in the Mandurah Mail and coordinated by SGIO.
The five-year-old’s entry was judged the best from the more than 250 entries received.
Two Mandurah youngsters, Izaha Wickham, 4, and Adam Farmer, 9, both won consolation prizes from Lane Ford Mandurah.
This is the second time the competition has been held since SGIO opened up a branch inside Lane Ford and once again was popular.

Making an impression: Lane Ford apprentice Nicholas Della-Pona won gold last month at the Worldskills Sate competition.

MANDURAH apprentice Nicholas Della-Pona won gold when he competed at the 2007 Worldskills State competition at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre last month, The 19-year-old Lane Ford employee and a colleague competed in the light vehicles category.
“A technician entered me, he thought I was capable of doing it,” Nicholas said.
The competition required entrants to undertake projects designed to test their diagnostic and practical hand skills abilities.
Nicholas said the competition required mostly diagnostics, diagnosing faults within an 80-minute time frame.
Projects included engine tuning and diagnosis, along with working on cooling systems, brakes, front suspension and steering, cam belt replacement and regular maintenance checks.
The third-year apprentice mechanic won an all- expenses paid trip to Melbourne, a $500 voucher, a medal and a certificate to be presented at an awards night in September.
Nicholas is expected to make the Western Australian team to compete in Melbourne next year.

 

Ford Performance show

PERFORMANCE enthusiasts gathered at Lane Ford last Saturday to view an impressive line-up of both new and old Ford performance vehicles.
Over 200 attended the annual event, with well over 50 cars entered.
Visitors were asked to vote for their three favourite vehicles and winners won Ford merchandise.
The lucky winners were Bret Howson, Frank Mastrantonio and Ian and Bev John.

PERFORMANCE enthusiasts and car buffs are gearing up for a performance ear extravaganza. On March 17, Lane Ford will hold its second annual Performance Day at its showroom at 107- 113 Pinjarra Road. The Falcon GT Club of Western Australia and FPV Tickford Owners Club of WA will return to the event this year and will again feature a convoy of around 50 cars.
Visitors will recognize a similar format to last year's inaugural event but for the first time a customer display has been arranged for keen owners to display their beloved vehicles.
Scott Waddell from Lane Ford said past customers who purchased XR8 and XR6 Turbo models were contacted with details of the event and encouraged to register their vehicles.
"We have already had 13 registrations," Mr. Waddell said.
"Some of the people we contacted had older performance cars in their garages that they wanted to display & so we should have a couple of them on the day as well."
The best vehicle from each club and the customer display will win a $1000 Lane Ford gift voucher to spend on merchandise. As each person enters they will be given three voting tickets, from which the winners will be decided.
The event is expected to draw similarly big crowds as last year.
"With every car comes about two people. plus the general public:' Mr. Waddeel said.
Accompanying the car display on the day will be a sausage sizzle, Mag wheels and tyre specials, John Bowe Performance Accessory displays, competitions, prizes and giveaways, a huge selection of new and used performance vehicles and 20 percent discount off 2006 season Ford Racing merchandise in stock.
